The equalizer

The equalizer is the middle panel of the window. It shapes the sound of everything Nastro plays with ten bands from deep bass to high treble, plus a preamp. Show or hide it with the EQ button of the player, View, Equalizer or Alt G.

Controls

The column of buttons at the left of the panel:

ButtonWhat it does
ONTurns the equalizer on or off. Off, the sound passes through untouched. Your settings are kept, so turning it on again brings the same curve back. It is on by default.
AUTOPicks a preset for each track from its genre tag, see Automatic presets. Off by default.
PRESETSOpens the list of presets. The one applied last is checked.
RESETSets the preamp and every band to 0 dB. The equalizer stays on or off as it was, and Flat is checked in the presets list.

Everything is remembered between sessions: whether it is on, whether AUTO is on, the preamp and the ten bands.

Preamp and bands

To the right of the buttons there are the response curve, the PRE slider and ten band sliders. Every slider goes from -12 dB at the bottom to +12 dB at the top, in steps of 1 dB, with 0 dB in the middle (the scale between the preamp and the first band shows +12, 0 and -12). Click or drag a slider to set it.

Band 72k2,000 Hz
Band 84k4,000 Hz
Band 98k8,000 Hz
Band 1016k16,000 Hz

Each band is a bell-shaped boost or cut around its frequency. Changes are smooth, so moving a slider while music plays does not click. A band whose frequency is at or above 0.45 times the sample rate of the file being played is skipped for that file. When the equalizer is off, or every slider is at 0 dB, the audio is not processed at all.

The preamp is the way to avoid distortion: when you boost bands, the total level goes up, and lowering the preamp by about the same amount keeps the sound from clipping. Every preset already does this.

The moment you move a slider by hand, no preset is checked any more, because the curve is no longer exactly that preset.

The response curve

The small display above the sliders draws the curve you have set: one point per band, from the 31 Hz band at the left edge to the 16 kHz band at the right edge, joined by straight lines. The dashed line in the middle is 0 dB. The height of each point is the gain of the band plus the preamp, limited to the -12 to +12 dB range of the display. The curve is drawn in the display colour while the equalizer is on and dimmed when it is off. It shows the settings, not a measurement of the music.

Presets

Choosing a preset sets the preamp and all ten bands, and keeps the equalizer on or off as it was. You can then adjust any slider. Gains are in dB.

The names are translated in the Spanish, Galician and Italian interfaces. The id is the stable name of the preset, it is what the session file stores.

Automatic presets

With AUTO on, each time a track starts Nastro reads its genre tag and applies the matching preset. The match is a keyword found anywhere in the genre text, ignoring case, and the first group that matches wins, checked in this order:

PresetGenre contains
Rockrock, metal, punk
Poppop
Jazzjazz, blues, swing
Classicalclassical, baroque, opera, orchestral
Dancedance, disco, house
Electronicelectronic, techno, trance, edm, ambient
Hip hophip hop, hip-hop, rap, r&b
Acousticfolk, acoustic, country
Vocalspoken, podcast, audiobook

A genre that matches none of these gets Flat. A track with no genre tag leaves the equalizer as it is. For example, Synth-Pop gets Pop and Progressive Rock gets Rock, while Reggae gets Flat.

AUTO replaces your curve with the preset every time a track starts. Turn it off to keep a curve you made yourself. The only presets AUTO ever picks are the ones in the table above, never Bass boost, Treble boost, Loudness, Soft, Headphones or Small speakers.

Collapsed equalizer

When the equalizer is collapsed to its title bar, a small light at the left of the title shows whether it is on. See Shade mode.
